A popular method of realigning the teeth that is quickly replacing traditional metal brackets and bands as the best way to straighten crooked teeth, Invisalign® does sometimes come with unanticipated problems. Although it is rare, an allergic Invisalign® reaction does occur in patients with a predisposition for sensitivity to plastic. An allergic Invisalign® reaction can be accompanied by mild or severe problems, depending on the level of sensitivity experienced.

Is It Possible to Keep Wearing the Trays if You Have an Allergic Invisalign® Reaction?

If the symptoms that you are experiencing during your allergic Invisalign® reaction are minor, it is quite possible that you will be able to tolerate them long enough to make it through your treatments. Severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, periods of unconsciousness, and nausea should not be overlooked. If any of these major symptoms occur, you might need to discontinue using your aligner trays. No matter how severe your allergic Invisalign® reaction is, you should contact your dentist to discuss them.

What Is the Likelihood That You Will Experience an Allergic Invisalign® Reaction?

Since episodes of allergic Invisalign® reactions uncommon, it is unlikely that you will experience any problems while wearing your trays.

Should You Worry about Having an Allergic Invisalign® Reaction If You Know That You Have an Allergy to Plastic Materials?

If you know that you have an allergy to plastic, you should discuss this with your dentist prior to arranging to undergo this method of straightening your teeth. An allergic Invisalign® reaction can be unpleasant at the least and life-threatening in the rarest of cases.

What Happens When You Have an Allergic Invisalign® Reaction?

If you have an allergy to Invisalign® braces, you’ll know right away. Your mouth will develop an itching or burning sensation. Typically, this problem continues the entire time that you are wearing your aligner trays, and it might even continue when you take them off to eat. You might also discover that your tongue and gums swell up as a result of this Invisalign® braces allergy. In rare cases, the patient might experience problems breathing and should go to the hospital for treatment.
